After doing some sight-seeing in the main town of Darjeeling, I head towards the Ging Tea House which is going to be the final destination of my trip. You can check my guide to things to do in Darjeeling.
Continuing my journey I headed to the taxi stand where the driver was waiting for me to take me to Ging. Tucked away in the lush green tea garden the Ging Tea House is an idyllic spot to spend some time amidst nature.
The Ging tea estate is around 11 km from the taxi stand. I traveled through the narrow lanes which run between the tea gardens. Away from the hustle-bustle of the town, there was a sense of tranquility in the surrounding. It took me almost half an hour and finally I was at my destination. As soon as I reached the tea house the staff was present there for a great welcome.
About the Property
The Ging Tea house is set in the heart of a 1400 acre tea estate which undoubtedly offers an amazing location. Dated back in 1866, it was one the first colonial tea planter’s bungalow. And a few years back it has been restored maintaining its colonial-style architecture. With the spectacular views of the Himalayas, a beautiful garden to relax on it is indeed a great choice for a perfect holiday.
The Bungalow houses 6 suites, each having a unique theme. The rooms are huge and provided with modern amenities. The furniture gives a vintage look to the whole setting. Slip in the wing-back chair near the fireplace in the cozy winter evenings and enjoy your favorite drink. Whether you want to go with family or friends the tea house has a room according to your needs. There are family suites as well as twin single beds, which you can book according to your preference.
I was offered a welcome drink and was soon served with some snacks. The main lawn has ample sitting area and a gazebo overlooking the tea estate. I was served a three-course meal for lunch, which was exquisite in every aspect.
What to do there
Tea Experience
After having my lunch one of the staff accompanied me for the tea factory tour. We walked through various sections of the tea estate and the guide explained to me how the buds are picked from the bushes depending upon the season.
After reaching the tea factory I learned the various steps that go into making the perfect cup of tea, and the tour ended with a “tea-tasting session”.
I set out for a leisurely walk through the walking trails. I wander through the tea plantation, lost in the picturesque backdrop and had a small talk with local Nepalese people.
In-house activities
There are ample entertainment options if you would like to stay indoors. Indulge in a game of billiards on their vintage English table or try your hands on playing the Piano. During the season there is bonfire and BBQ in the outdoors.
There was a special musical performance in the evening too, where a local band performed for us playing a mix of English, Hindi, and Nepalese songs.
Food
Finally talking about the food, variety is the name of the game when it comes to dining. The menu is elaborate and comprises of a lot of dishes. Every aspect of my stay exceeded the expectations and I definitely got the luxury which I was promised upon.
And especially to mention the staff is very courteous and warm. The property manager Mr.Andrew himself checks on every guest and takes care of their every need.
Cost
The tariff includes Sumptuous Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks and Dinner along with beverages. You can easily book the property through Booking.com.
Best time to go
In the summer months from April to June and later October to March is the best time to visit Darjeeling.
October-March – You will get to see the best view of lesser Himalayas and there is a slight chill in the environment.
April-June – The weather is quite pleasant during these months but usually packed with lots of tourists.
The next morning I had to check out early as I had a flight to catch from Bagdogra in the afternoon. I was served with an early breakfast and one of the guys from the staff, Nikesh helped me to take a local taxi till Darjeeling.
Surrounded by green tea gardens and snow-capped mountains if you are looking for a dose of luxury do spend a few days here. Overall it was a wonderful trip and I must thank the lovely team of Ging Tea House to make my trip extra special.
