Trip to Öland! Short or long, it is truly an incredible destination for a fun filled holiday.
And in this Öland blog I’ll share with you some of my top things to do in Öland.
Going on a 3 days trip is sufficient to see some of the most interesting places in Öland. But if you can spare couple of days more that’s even better, you can take the sights more slowly. Let me share with you the best things to do in Öland and tips to make the most out of your trip.
1. Borgholm Castle
Borgholm Castle are the ruins of an erstwhile castle located in Öland.
It was rebuilt several times after its inception but not after a fire destroyed it in 1806. There is a modern museum nearby tell you its story.

- It doesn’t take an expert to see that it is built in a Baroque architecture style.

2. Solliden Palace
Solliden Palace is a beautiful palace located in Öland, Sweden.
The Solliden Palace was used by the royal family of Sweden as their summer residence. The palace is only open in summer, between May-September.
Quick Facts:
- A marvel of design, it was King Carl XVI who was responsible for building it.
An incredible sight, Solliden Palace scores high in the list of the best things to do in Öland.

3. Långe Jan
Långe Jan is a long-standing lighthouse which has been in continuous use since its inception.
It has been an important signal point to warn incoming ships away from the shoreline. Even from the land this pretty whitewashed lighthouse can be seen from miles.
If you like lighthouses you’d love this one, also add to your bucketlist the lighthouses of Landsort, Kullen and Vinga.
The biggest letdown are the limited visiting hours, bummer really! But it is the Sun dropping in the ocean which is truly the best part of this place.

4. Öland Bridge
Tall and elongated, Öland Bridge is an amazing piece of modern architecture.
Indeed, Öland Bridge is a treasured landmark of the city of Öland. For a unique perspective I recommed you to see it from water by boarding a public ferry.
The bridge joins Kalmar on the Swedish mainland with the island of Öland.

- Öland Bridge was opened in September 1972.
- The modern bridge has a height of around 42 m.
A natural crowd puller, Öland Bridge is right up there in the list of best things to do in Öland.

5. Öland Zoo and Amusement Park
A popular zoo in Öland, Öland Zoo and Amusement Park shelters a variety of animals.
An Amusement Park is co-located with the zoo, entertaining the kids and the adults alike.
A variety of large cats are present such as tiger, lion and leopard. Visiting Öland Zoo and Amusement Park is a fun and educational day out for the whole family.

6. Trollskogen
Trollskogen is a nature reserve, and a protected area, with a lush green jungle scenery.
A whole world of discovery and adventure awaits you upon your visit to Trollskogen.
If you are an outdoorsy type you’d fit right in this beautiful landscape. Start with the visitor center to help yourself get oriented.

7. Byrums raukar
A site that surprises you with its randomness, Byrums raukar is a place known for its unique rock formations.
Millions of years that’s what it takes for these to form.
The area consists of a number of geological formations made entirely of limestone rocks. Stacked up along the length of a beach, these towering stone sculptures make an interesting constrast against the blue ocean.

8. Neptune’s fields
Neptune’s fields is a pristine area of natural beauty located in Öland region.

You’ll discover numerous rivers and lakes in the park accounting for a large of its area. You will find plenty of climbing and adventure opportunities in here.

9. Vida museum & konsthall
Vida museum & konsthall is an art gallery with an impressive set of collection.
The Vida museum & konsthall is worth visiting for its stunning glass art pieces.
If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Öland trip.

10. Källa Old Church
If small, cute churches interests you, then Källa Old Church definitely worth your time.
Interestingly, it was abandoned in 19th century but was later adopted again.
You can buy a candle and light it, it feels so peaceful. All in all this small church makes for a quick stop.

11. Hornsjön
Hornsjön is a calm and beautiful body of water located in Öland.
The lake has a serenity around it that wraps up on you quickly. Enjoy the boating, quite an experience in the tranquil waters of the lake.

- Spread over an area of 2 sq. km., the lake is located in Horns Kungsgård area.
- The lake has a depth of around 4 meters max.
Add it to your Öland trip if you have time.
But beyond the famous attractions in Öland, there is something that pulls you back again and again, perhaps it’s the city’s charm. All in all, whether you are a backpacker, a solo traveler, slow traveler, a female traveler or a couple there are plenty of interesting things to do in Öland for everyone.
