Backpacking Yerevan is such a fun experience as you’d never run out of things to do. And in this travel blog I’ll share with you some of my top places to visit in Yerevan.
An itinerary of 5 days in Yerevan is enough to see the top attractions. So let’s begin our trip to Yerevan, shall we?
1. Republic Square
Republic Square is the central plaza, the heart of the beautiful city of Yerevan. It is a part of the old town and a popular meeting point.
Alexander Tamanian is the one who designed this magnificent square. The square is spread in an area of 3 ha. The construction of the square was completed on 1977.
The construction started in 1926.
2. Matenadaran
Matenadaran is a specialized research institute located in the city of Yerevan. It is among the top places to visit in Yerevan. Matenadaran acts as a base for researchers looking for the further advancement in the field.
The list of architects include Arthur Meschian, Mark Grigorian. The institute was established in 3 March 1959.
3. Tsitsernakaberd
Tsitsernakaberd is a memorial complex located in the city of Yerevan. The memorial serves as a symbol, a remembrance and a stark reminder.
Do pay homage to the fallen before you leave. Visiting the memorial complex is an emotional experience. The memorial complex is housed in a notable building with elegant architecture.
The chief architect of the memorial complex is Arthur Tarkhanyan. On 1967 the memorial complex was opened for the public.

4. Zvartnots Cathedral
Zvartnots Cathedral is a charming old Cathedral located in the city of Yerevan, Armenia. It is one of the popular attractions in Yerevan.
The cathedral is adorned with a beautiful round dome. Excellent sweeping views of the city can be had from cathedral’s tower. The organ might be old but functions perfectly.
The tombs houses some of the famous people of Yerevan. The frescoes hanging in the cathedral are worth your time. The Zvartnots Cathedral follows the Armenian Architecture style.
The cathedral stands tall at a height of 45 m. The materials used in the construction include Tufa, Pumice, Obsidian.

5. Mother Armenia monument
Mother Armenia monument is a beautifully sculpted statue which was erected as a monument in the Yerevan city.
Rafayel Israyelian is the principal architect of the monument. The monument is located at an elevation of 51 m. On 1967 the monument was opened for the public.
Ara Harutyunyan is the famed artist behind it.
6. Yerevan Opera Theatre
Yerevan Opera Theatre is an opera house, a theater of performing art with long history. It is a popular tourist destination in Yerevan. I will recommend this to the first time watchers of a ballet performance.
Artists from all over the world come here, it’s that good! The opera theater is housed in an elegant historical building. Watchout for the excellent accoustics, one of the speciality of the opera theater.
This grand opera house is also a cultural landmark of Yerevan city. Yerevan Opera Theatre is truly an amazing place for music and dance lovers.
7. History Museum Of Armenia
History Museum Of Armenia is a museum housing historical artefacts. The museum comprises of numerous rooms housing archaeological collections, items of art and numismatics belonging to the region.
The history museum is housed in a beautiful building. Overall, the museum looks well organised and very well presented. On 1919 the history museum was opened for the public.
The size of the collection is around Archaeological, Numismatic, Ethnographic.
8. Etchmiadzin Cathedral
Etchmiadzin Cathedral is a beautiful Cathedral situated in Yerevan. Right among the top places to visit in Yerevan is the Etchmiadzin Cathedral.
On the church wall you will find several religious artwaork hanging. The ornate interior is eye-catching. The tombs belong to some of the who’s who of Yerevan.
The frescoes in the cathedral are worth looking at. The cathedral is conveniently located in the city’s old town. The Etchmiadzin Cathedral follows the Armenian Architecture style.
The chief architect of the cathedral is Gregory the Illuminator.

9. Vernissage
Vernissage is a busy street market selling all kind of stuff.

10. Blue Mosque
Blue Mosque is a beautiful mosque considered to be one of the most important in the area. One of the favorite tourist places to visit in Yerevan is the Blue Mosque.
Visitors are not allowed during the prayer times. The mosque is built in a Islamic architecture style.
11. Erebuni Fortress
Erebuni Fortress is an rustic fort in Yerevan with a long lost history.
Be prepared to do lot of walking around. The fab views are something to be seen though. The fort has a fab location – on a hill top.
The fort plays host to regular events, hit it up. You will need at least a few hours to explore. The material used in the construction include Adobe.
12. Victory Park
Victory Park is a large public park in the Yerevan city. It is one of the most popular tourist places in Yerevan.
Victory Park allows you to spend time actively – engage yourself in walking, running or cycling. The urban park is spread in an area of 34 ha.

13. Cafesjian Center for the Arts
Cafesjian Center for the Arts is an interesting museum collecting some of the finest pieces of modern art.
On 9 November 2009 the Modern Art Museum was opened for the public. The size of the collection is around more than 5,000.

14. Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral
Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral is a majestic Cathedral standing tall in the city of Yerevan, Armenia. It is one of the top things to do in Yerevan.
You can visit crypts if you are feeling brave enough. The frescoes are lovable even if you are not into art. The cathedral houses the tombs of important dignitaries of that era.
The cathedral houses well crafted statues. The old organ of the cathedral is charming to listen to. The style in which the cathedral is built is Armenian Architecture.
The cathedral stands tall at a height of 60 m.
15. Sergei Parajanov Museum
Sergei Parajanov Museum is a house museum with a focus on showcasing personal items. Sergei Parajanov Museum is a living museum, a walk through the personal life.
The house museum is truly meant for the fans. Sergei Parajanov Museum really is a beautiful and charming house. If you are someone who likes architecture, Sergei Parajanov Museum should be in your todo list.
On 1988 the house museum was opened for the public.

16. Saint Hripsime Church
Saint Hripsime Church is an old church located in the city of Yerevan. It is one of the top places to visit in Yerevan.
Do check out the highly revered relic kept in this church. Bow down and you will see the colorfully painted floor. The church stands tall and even seems imposing on you.
The views from the top are something to be admired. Guided tour is recommend if you are looking to understand more. The church is built in a Armenian Architecture style.
Komitas Aghtsetsi is considered to be the founder of the church. The length of the place is around 23 m.
17. Yerevan Noy Wine Brandy Vodka Factory
Yerevan Noy Wine Brandy Vodka Factory is a winery with a nice vineyard and a wine making facility.
It is spread over a large area and requires a longer visit. The winery is located outside the city so plan accordingly. Exhibits have a high degree of educational value.
Guided tour is available and is very informative.

18. Saint Gayane Church
Saint Gayane Church is a beautiful church located in the Yerevan city. It scores high in the list of the best places to visit in Yerevan.
Not to mention the altar pieces, simply stunning. The cemetry has got quite a few notable person buried. The church just kinda looks very imposing.
The ancient relic is more than noteworthy. Drop your head to admire the prettily decorated floor. The style in which the church is built is Armenian Architecture.
It was designated as world heritage site in 2000 (24th session).

19. National Gallery of Armenia
The National Art Museum of Armenia is a museum in Yerevan dedicated to country’s artists and art movements. National Gallery of Armenia includes several centuries of artwork from paintings to decorative objects. The museum is located in a grand heritage building which is an attraction by itself.
Take a longer look at the master artwork of the oil paintings. The collection at National Gallery of Armenia is undoubtedly impressive. Also, the place presents a unique insight into the culture of the region.

20. Erebuni Museum
Erebuni Museum is an interesting museum located in the Yerevan city. It is among the top places to visit in Yerevan.
The building is multistory, with many floors. The collection here at the museum is spread over hundreds of years. The museum usually draws a large crowd.
The guided tour is worthwhile, take it. The museum is meant for everyone, doesn’t matter what their age is.
21. Zoravor Surp Astvatsatsin Church
Zoravor Surp Astvatsatsin Church is an interesting church that can be found in Yerevan.
The adjoining cemetry has got quite a few famous people buried. The art pieces that decorate the altar adds to its beauty. The choir is decorated with beautiful religious paintings.
The views are just wonderful. There is a cute little chapel here as well. The Zoravor Surp Astvatsatsin Church follows the Armenian church architecture style.
On 1694 the church was opened for the public.
22. Mount Aragats
Mount Aragats is a volcano at a high elevation with a towering peak. Add it to your Yerevan trip if you have time.
The volcano is located at an elevation of 4,090 m. The age of the rock here is estimated to be around Holocene.
Hovhannavank is a religious complex founded centuries ago.
The monastery also houses religious scholars and monks. Hovhannavank is a nice tranquil place away from the chaos. The monastery features a beautiful church, religious library & a museum with historical artifacts.
The monastery is built in a Armenian Architecture style. The construction of the monastery was completed on 1216.
24. Lovers’ Park
Lovers’ Park is a public park located in the Yerevan city. If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Yerevan trip.
The attached cafe is quite chill. If you are a family, you will surely enjoy the park. The park even has a gazebo, great for those pictures.
Also, scroll through the brilliantly crafted statues of Lovers’ Park. The playground at the park is also an added attraction. Pierre Rambach is the one who designed this magnificent park.
The park is spread in an area of 2 ha.
25. Yerevan Zoo
Yerevan Zoo is a great city zoo housing a myriad of animals.
The variety of birds at the zoo is astonishing. It is spread over a large area. You will find that the exhibits are quite educational.
The zoo is a good choice for some family time. Feeding sessions are a great way to learn and interact with animals. The zoo is spread in an area of 35 ha.

26. Yerevan Brandy Company
Yerevan Brandy Company is a unique museum with an exhibit featuring history of speciality spirit in the region. Add it to your Yerevan trip if you have time. Watch the short movie to understand how this spirit is made & aged.
If you want to buy some for yourself, you can do so as well from the brand store. Head to the tasting room if you are keen to try on some delicious varieties. The bit on the history of distilling is quite informative I’d say.

27. Yerevan Water World
With numerous activities, Yerevan Water World is quite a popular waterpark. The water park has several fun rides, water slides, tubing wave pool and a wave machine.
And when you are hungry you can eat at the in-house eatery. Pay attention to the life guards, it will keep you safe. The waterpark is spread over a large area.
Use the changing room, they are small but clean. Yerevan Water World is a good idea on a hot summer day. On 2001 the waterpark was opened for the public.
28. Freedom Square
Freedom Square is the central square of the city of Yerevan. Add it to your Yerevan trip if you have time. This is where various festivals, concerts and carnivals are held throughout the year.
29. Karen Demirchyan Complex
Located in the city of Yerevan, Karen Demirchyan Complex is an entertainment complex with a variety of recreational options.
The list of architects include Arthur Tarkhanyan, Gurgen Musheghian.
30. Yerevan History Museum
Yerevan History Museum is an interesting museum located in Yerevan. If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Yerevan trip. The collection includes artefacts related with the history of the region.
Overall, the museum looks well organised and very well presented. The history museum is housed in a beautiful building.
31. Shoghakat Church
Shoghakat Church is a house of Christian worship located in the city of Yerevan.
The stunning stained glass windows are worthy a long look. And the altar pieces are the icing on the cake. Getting to the top requires you to take the flight of stairs.
A quiet looking cemetry adores the church ground. Stop and take a moment to look at the choir paintings. The style in which the church is built is Armenian Architecture.
On 1694 the church was opened for the public. It was designated as world heritage site in 2000 (24th session).

32. Katoghike Church
Katoghike Church is a house of Christian worship located in the city of Yerevan. If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Yerevan trip.

Get to the top for the top notch views. In the church grounds there is a cemetry as well. The Katoghike Church follows the Armenian church architecture style.

33. Modern Art Museum of Yerevan

34. Saint Sarkis Cathedral
Saint Sarkis Cathedral is an old Cathedral located in the Yerevan city. If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Yerevan trip.
Statues are the live examples of master craftsmanship. The elaborate dome of the Saint Sarkis Cathedral is one of the centerpiece of attraction. Ready to go underground? Well checkout the crypts of the cathedral.

If you are looking for a change of pace from the usual sightseeing, it’s a good option. The place is quite popular among locals as well. The lake is spread in an area of 3,000 m².

Exhibits are informative and educational. And the winery is covered is a large area. The winery is located bit outside the town, but it isn’t to reach.
Rusa II is the builder behind the winery. The winery stands tall at a height of 901 m. The excavation dates of the site goes back to 1939.
47. Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin
Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin is a centuries old religious complex located near the city of Yerevan.
The monastery is noted for its beautiful chapel, old library and cloister.
48. Yerevan Lake
Yerevan Lake is a charming lake in the Yerevan region. Add it to your Yerevan trip if you have time.
The lake has a serenity around it that wraps up on you quickly. There are so many biking trails, and happy bikers too. Boating is a very relaxed way to enjoy your time in the lake.
The water is clear and you can see through. If you are looking to be in nature, this is a good option.
All in all, whether you are a backpacker, a solo traveler or a female traveler, a couple or a family, there are plenty of things to do in Yerevan for everyone. There is something about Yerevan, that pulls you back to this place again and again, to explore more and more.
