If you are in Estonia, you can’t keep Hiiumaa off your travel list. As a long list of best places in Hiiumaa to see awaits you, the city will undoubtedly entice and enchant you.
And in this Hiiumaa blog I’ll share with you some of my top things to do in Hiiumaa.
In my opinion, 5 days in Hiiumaa is good time to see the best that city has to offer. But if you can spare couple of days more that’s even better, you can take the sights more slowly. Here is a combined list of best tourist places in Hiiumaa as well as some of the best things to do in Hiiumaa.
1. Kõpu Lighthouse
Kõpu Lighthouse is an enduring stone lighthouse with a long history.
It has been an important signal point to warn incoming ships away from the shoreline. Even from the land this pretty whitewashed lighthouse can be seen from miles.
A set of narrow spiral staircases leads you to the top. Also located on the same premises, the nautical museum is worth a quick look.

- Touching a height of 36 m, the lighthouse was built in x1531.

2. Tahkuna Lighthouse
Tahkuna Lighthouse is a well known lighthouse located off the coast of Hiiumaa.
It has served as an important signal point for incoming vessels. With a beautiful beach nearby you can combine the visit to two.
You pay a small fee to get in. Do plan in advance as visitor hours are quite limited.
Quick Facts:
- Easy to get to Tahkuna Lighthouse is located in xthe Tahkuna Peninsula.
- The lighthouse was opened on 1875.
- The lighthouse has a height of around 43 m.
Without a doubt this wonderful lighthouse is one amongst the top things to do in Hiiumaa.

3. Port of Heltermaa
If you are interested in seeing a working port in action you are at the right place.
4. Hiiumaa Muuseum
A small but competent museum, Hiiumaa Muuseum is good for a quick visit.
With so much to offer, no wonder Hiiumaa Muuseum is one of the top things to do in Hiiumaa.

5. Suuremõisa mansion
Suuremõisa mansion is a manor house as grand as it gets.

6. Hülgerahu
Hülgerahu is a serene island, known for its scenic beauty, located out in the open sea.
You will get to see some of the fantastic views of the sea.
The beach with crystal clear water is clearly a winner. And to top it off, the boat trip to Hülgerahu itself is really enjoyable.
Quick Facts:
- Spread over an area of x0.15 hectares, it is difficult to take-in all in one go.
A natural crowd puller, Hülgerahu is right up there in the list of best things to do in Hiiumaa.
7. Saarnaki laid
Saarnaki laid is a small island lying off the city’s coast, only a short distance from the Hiiumaa city.
You will get to see some of the fantastic views of the sea.
Snorkeling is a particularly popular activity here. You can also enjoy the soft sand on the pristine beach.

- Spread over an area of x140 hectares, it is difficult to take-in all in one go.
8. Hiiumaa Military Museum
For anyone interested in military history of the region, Hiiumaa Military Museum is a good place to start.
I find medals & documents to be quite an interesting thing to observe. There are exhibits in the large outdoor area as well. Some of these include armoured vehicles and anti aircraft guns.

9. Kassari Chapel
Kassari Chapel is a small, beautiful church made entirely of stone.
All in all this small church makes for a quick stop.
Quick Facts:
- The stone church was built somewhere around x18th century.
If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Hiiumaa trip.

10. Hiiumaa Islets Nature Park
Hiiumaa Islets Nature Park is a forest reserve of national importance found in the Hiiumaa region.
The park consists of well-marked hiking trails leading you to some of the most incredible vistas in Estonia. If you seek adventure and looking to explore Hiiumaa Islets Nature Park is just the right place.
11. Hanikatsi laid
A little piece of paradise, and a great holiday destination, Hanikatsi laid is truly a gem.
Hanikatsi laid is actually so small that it has no permanent habitation.
And to top it off, the boat trip to Hanikatsi laid itself is really enjoyable. The beach with crystal clear water is clearly a winner.

- Spreading over an expanse of x83 hectares, it’s difficult to see it all in one go.
Add it to your Hiiumaa trip if you have time.
12. Pihla-Kaibaldi Nature Reserve
Pihla-Kaibaldi Nature Reserve is a pristine area of natural beauty located in Hiiumaa region.
A whole world of discovery and adventure awaits you upon your visit to Pihla-Kaibaldi Nature Reserve.
The reserve is spread over a large tract of land, covering several hundred acres of forested area. A playground for the ones looking for adventure.

- Spreading over an expanse of 37.8 km², it’s difficult to see it all in one go.
13. Reigi Church
Don’t forget to pay a visit to Reigi Church, which is regarded to be one of Hiiumaa’s most beautiful churches.
As this is a sacred location, anyone who want to enter are advised to cover their knees and shoulders. It is well worth to pay a small donation, as it goes towards supporting the ongoing upkeep of this piece of history.
If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Hiiumaa trip.

15. Lake Tihu
Lake Tihu is a small but charming lake located in beautiful natural setting.
There is also a park on shore, with a playground for little ones too. If you are feeling lazy, you can idle away time sitting on a bench and looking at the tranquil waters.

If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Hiiumaa trip.
16. Rudolf Tobias House Museum
Rudolf Tobias House Museum is a museum built honoring one of the city’s most illustrious citizens/residents.
This magnificent mansion and garden may be enjoyed by everyone even who know little about the person. Rudolf Tobias House Museum provides a unique opportunity to get insight into the life of one of Estonia’s cultural giants.

17. Kärdla church
This classical church is a must see no matter what your purpose for visiting Hiiumaa.
There are beautiful paintings on the walls that will catch your attention quick. Making a small donation is always appreciated.
If you have time, it makes for a nice addition to your Hiiumaa trip.
But beyond the famous attractions in Hiiumaa, there is something that pulls you back again and again, perhaps it’s the city’s charm.
