One of the many top places to visit in Hampi, the stunning Badavilinga Temple is a work of excellent Dravidian craftmanship. A must visit in a 3 days Hampi itinerary, Badavilinga Temple is one tourist’s favorite.

Despite its small and unassuming appearance, the temple houses a massive Shiva Lingam, which will come as a bit of surprise.

The Badavilinga Temple is housed in a rectangular chamber containing an enormous shiva-linga. A single entryway to this stone chamber allows people to enter and exit. You will notice that there isn’t any ceiling over the inner chamber. Sunlight streams in via the hole in the roof, illuminating the housed Shiva Linga brightly.

The Shiva Linga’s yone pitha is represented by a circular base. This large pedestal is in turn connected to a pranala, an outlet of sort. This base floats in a layer of water, and a small channel runs through the shrine. Note that the water level is continually maintained.

Interestingly, the temple survived the test of the time. It was only partially destroyed when the city of Hampi fell many centuries ago. But somehow the Shiva Linga survived to the present day. Also, this temple’s internal walls, have also been saved from a significant harm.
