    Varakala

    Varakala is a small town in Kerala popular for its crescent shaped beaches and a laidback culture together with its reputation in international backpacking circuit. Inevitably, it has somewhat shunned its off-the-beaten-track tag and has become a top getaway destination for the young crowd from Bangalore. Because of the presence of foreign nationals in large number, you can even say Varkala is one of the top hippie destination in India.

    The clean beaches of Varkala provide a perfect opportunity to unwind yourself, and the two giant cliffs in north and south overlooking the beach adds to the charm. Varkala is located quite close (55 kilometers) to Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala, and can be easily reached by both train and bus.

    There are several options available to reach Varkala from Bangalore. You can get to Varkala from Bangalore using Bus, Train and as well as Flight.

    Varkala by Train

    The Varkala city boasts an excellent train connection to locations both in Kerala as well as outside. The city of Varkala lies on the main line between Kochi and Trivandrum. Varkala has a direct train connection to Bangalore as well. The trains coming from Bangalore to Trivandrum also make a stop in Varkala.

    Varkala by Bus

    From Bangalore there are no direct buses available to reach Varkala. So, you need to reach either Trivandrum or Kovalam first The Bangalore to Trivandrum bus takes around 12-14 hours for the whole  journey. Once you reach Trivandrum, you can easily get to Varkala by Train. The journey from Trivandrum to Varkala by train takes around 2-2.5 hours.

    Moreover, to get to Varkala from Trivandrum you can jump right in into one of the local buses or any bus going towards Kochi.

    How to get around Varkala

    The ways to navigate the little town of Varkala is by taking a gearless bike (aka scooters Activa and alike). You can hire a gearless scooter for one day for about 350/- INR.
