Visit Lithuania once and you wouldn’t want to pack your bags. It might be difficult for travelers with a limited amount of time to decide what to see in Kaunas.
Through this Kaunas blog, I will share with you some of the most interesting things to do in Kaunas.
In my opinion, 4 days in Kaunas is good time to see the best that city has to offer. But if you can add 2-3 days more you’d be able to experience rather than ‘see’ that an ordinary tourist does. So, without further ado, let me present you some of the best things to do in Kaunas, top things to do in Kaunas and some helpful travel tips.
1. Kaunas Castle
Kaunas Castle is a medieval fortified structure perched over a hilltop.
Occasionally, you will find information boards giving you details about the place. There are trails running around the castle which takes you through the woods and to a series of vantage points.
2. Pažaislis Monastery
The monastery is known for its religious studies. Chants not only vibrate through the chambers of the monastery but through your body.

- The monastery was opened on 1664.
- Built in Baroque architecture style, it is eye pleasingly pretty site to look at.

3. Ninth Fort
If you like to be active and explore things on your own, then make some time for Ninth Fort.
Because of its strategic importance, controlling the castle simply implied controlling the city of Kaunas. The Ninth Fort has borne witness to some of the most important events of the city’s history.

There are high-end fashion brands lined up, selling everything from clothing to accessories. All through the street, you’ll be greeted by the magnificent facade of some of the grand old buildings of Kaunas.

8. Vytautas the Great War Museum
For anyone interested in military history of the region, Vytautas the Great War Museum is a good place to start.
There are exhibits in the large outdoor area as well. Some of these include armoured vehicles and anti aircraft guns. I find medals & documents to be quite an interesting thing to observe.

- The military museum was opened on 1936.
- Also worth seeing here include a wrecked 1930s plane.

9. Kaunas Botanical Gardens
Kaunas Botanical Gardens is a large expanse of green located in the very heart of Kaunas.
The garden was created to help in the scientific study of plants for research and medicinal purposes.
The plants come from different environments and climate zones. This includes tropical, subtropical, wetland, mountainous and plenty others. This greenhouse is where city’s most exotic plant species are to be found.

- Spread over an area of 62.5-hectare, the botanical garden is located in the southern Kaunas.
- Some of the things Kaunas Botanical Gardens features include play area for kids.
- The botanical garden was opened on 1923.
- The botanical garden is run by Vytautas Magnus University.

10. St. Michael the Archangel Church
Don’t forget to pay a visit to St. Michael the Archangel Church, which is regarded to be one of Kaunas’s most beautiful churches.
The adjoining cemetry has got quite a few famous people buried. It is well worth to pay a small donation, as it goes towards supporting the ongoing upkeep of this piece of history.

- A fine example of Byzantine Revival architecture, the church is a center of Roman Catholic faith.
- The church was opened on 1895.

A beautiful addition to city’s architecture, Christ’s Resurrection Church is a house of christian worship located in Kaunas.
The cemetry is where the famous and powerful people of the Kaunas are buried. A donation at the entrance is optional but encouraged, since it will go towards the preservation of this piece of history.

- This 70 m high structure was brainchild of the architect Karlis Reisons.
- The church belongs to the Roman Catholic faith, but is visited by others too.

Kaunas Cathedral Basilica is a charming old Cathedral located in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania.
The inside of the cathedral is adorned with a dazzling array of intricate frescoes depicting important Christian events. One of the most impressive structures in Kaunas, the cathedral boasts of a magnificently built front façade topped with sculptures of the twelve Apostles.

There is so much beauty in this church, from the front facade to the interior that it’s hard to choose a favorite. As this is a sacred location, anyone who want to enter are advised to cover their knees and shoulders.
