When travellers head away for a trip, they often steer clear of the big, buzzing cities in favour of a quieter getaway. However, if you’re looking for excitement there are plenty of places to find it – and these five destinations are some of the world’s most energetic.
New York City, USA
It’s no secret that New York City packs a world of energy and excitement into its relatively small size. But beyond the main attractions, there’s a whole new level of the city you likely wouldn’t discover otherwise – in Manhattan and beyond, there’s a wealth of exciting and interesting things to be seen and experienced.
From the Bronx, NYC’s northernmost borough, and its zoo, botanical gardens and abundance of incredible eateries, through to Manhattan and Brooklyn’s buzzing bars, as well as the classic Times Square and its constant street entertainment, this truly is the city that never sleeps. Venture out at any time of the day and you’ll be hard done by finding a quiet moment – that’s the beauty of New York.
Queenstown, New Zealand
If you’re the kind of traveller that looks for pure thrills, Queenstown should be your first port of call. Located in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, this little getaway is actually home to an abundance of exciting activities, from the country’s highest bungee platform through to a range of winter sports.
Whether you want some high-octane thrills, such as the aforementioned bungee jumping or perhaps a spot of sky diving, or some relaxed activities such as hiking or cycling, Queenstown offers the best opportunities what with its varied terrains and sweeping panoramas of Lake Wakatipu and beyond. Once you’re done, head back into the town and pick up a Fergburger – they’re said to be the best burgers in the entire world.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Listed as one of the world’s best party towns by the Secret Traveller, Rio de Janeiro has long been a staple upon the bucket lists of travellers worldwide, and it’s easy to see why. From Copacabana Beach to Leblon and its abundance of delectable restaurants and buzzing bars, this Brazilian city is constantly alive with jubilant locals and non-stop energy.
And, if you visit at the right time of the year, be sure to head to the world-renowned Carnival. Hundreds of thousands of revellers, both locals and tourists alike, head to the streets to partake in colourful parades and exhilarating parties that last for nearly a week long.
Koh Phangan, Thailand
Despite maintaining a sleepy and tranquil personality throughout the majority of the year, Koh Phangan is home to one of Thailand’s – if not the world’s – biggest and best celebrations. The Full Moon Party takes place every full moon (hence the name) and sees thousands of revellers flock to the island to party the night away upon the beaches and within the bars.
From fire dancing to neon painting, it’s definitely a colourful and vibrant occasion, and it’s one that travellers from across the world are desperate to attend. And, best of all, it’s one of the safest parties in the world – so you’ll have nothing to worry about as you dance under moonlight.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Although Amsterdam boasts a wealth of cultural importance underneath its stereotypically hedonistic exterior, many travellers come here for the livelier side of things – and rightfully so. Amsterdam is one of the world’s party hotspots, with plenty of bars for you to dance the night away within.
Whether it be a small hideaway tucked away in an alley or a boat party upon the canals, Amsterdam has plenty of opportunities for you to drink and party throughout the day and the night. Whatever you’re looking for from your travels, this city has it all in spades.
