Located in Kamalapura, the Archaeological Museum is dedicated to the ruins of Hampi and the mighty Vijayanagara Empire.
A popular tourist destination and a must in your 3 days Hampi itinerary, it is situated amongst the ruins of Vijayanagara’s historic capital, just outside the Royal Center.
The Archaeological museum is open to public and doesn’t have a separate entrance fee.
Though small it is a significant museum which conserves riches of the past from the Vijayanagara Empire.
The museum, which was established in 1972 by the Archaeological Survey of India, is also managed by it.
It was constructed by ASI with the aim of maintaining the Hampi remains.
As the history goes, a group of British officials, doing repairs, had collected a number of antiquities and artefacts, and had kept the in the famed elephant stable. Some of the antiquities include coins, paintings, everyday tools, ivory crafts.

Following the completion of the existing museum, all of these artefacts were transported to the newly built museum.
The archaeological museum is organized into four sub-section, each of which displaying a unique collection of artefacts.
In the first portion of the museum, you may observe scaled reconstruction of the Hampi topography.
With monuments and temples as well as the whole landscape of the region shown on the map, it provides an excellent overview of the many attractions in Hampi.
The second section has a massive collection of sculptures and idols, e.g. Shiva idols, that were unearthed from the ruins.
